In his book The Da Vinci Code Dan Brown (DB) mixes fact with fiction and calls it truth. He states up front that book is based on facts – but archeologists, art experts and historians all say he got major facts wrong.
He attacks central ideas of christian faith. 3 are discussed below:
DB says bible gospels not a true presentation of the gospels – he bases his on the gnostic gospels (esp the gospel of Thomas)
DB claims in gospel of Thomas that Jesus was a man
DB claims that Jesus and Mary Magdelene married and had kids (and the family line still lives today)
DB claims a secret way to heaven to those who have the knowledge
Bible says its known and easy to get to heaven – believe in Jesus
DB’s gonostic gospels were written no earlier than 300AD – by people who were not alive at the time and not by the apostles.
Bible gospels started being written 48AD by the apostles
The bible warns us about following other gospels: Galatians 1:6-9 (see below)
DB says Jesus a great leader and a good man
DB refers to the Nicene Council (325AD) saying they came up with a story to say Jesus is divine.
Bible says (written before Nicene Council) that the good news is Jesus was born of a virgin, died for our sins and rose again to save us. He is the way to heaven. Jesus is the son of the living God.
Nicene Council concerned itself with some admin matters (eg: what happens when one bishop moves to a territory which already has a bishop) and also confirmation of the trinity. They decided on a standard date to celebrate Easter. Also came up with the Nicene Creed.
The bible warns us about stories about Jesus: 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 (see below)
Bible has very little about her. There are no other writings other than the limited notes in the bible.
Luke 8:2 – Jesus drives 7 demons out of her
John 20 – first person to see resurrected Jesus
DB – makes up a whole story on her life based on nothing from scripture or history
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
2 Corinthians 11:3-4
But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.
